Ulster Girls took on Wales earlier this afternoon and despite an impressive performance, came away with a 2-0 loss.
The game got underway at 2pm and just two minutes into the fixture, the girls were behind after a well-worked short corner found the back of the net.
That goal seemingly knocked the confidence of the young Ulster side as in the moments that followed they conceded a handful of half chances but managed to keep the score at 1-0.
However, it didn’t take long for our side to start to play to their full potential. By the beginning of the second quarter, the girls were beginning to look like an attacking threat as a handful of chances after the restart saw the Welsh goalkeeper forced into a number of saves.
Their dominance of the quarter continued until half-time with several short corners being won but to no avail as the Welsh defence held firm.
That would turn out to be a constant in the game. As we entered the third quarter Ulster continued to dominate both possession and the number of chances but on each occasion, they lacked a final finish.
With 47 of the 60 minutes played it was apparent it wasn’t going to be for the Ulster girls as they were denied from two more short corners with one being saved and another going narrowly wide of the near post. However, despite their lack of luck in the penalty area they continued to play to a very high level.
Just a minute later two of the Ulster players combined brilliantly on the edge of the penalty area to create a 1v1 with the goalkeeper only for her to be quick off her line and close the shooting angle.
Then with just four minutes remaining, Wales caught Ulster on the counter-attack before a brilliant shot from just inside the circle picked out the top corner to extend the Welsh lead to 2-0 against the run of play.
The strike was enough to confirm victory for our opponents as we fell to a defeat despite a dominant performance throughout the fixture.
In the other girls fixture, Ulster were unfortunate to lose to North West Talent Academy 3-1 with Molly Young grabbing the consolation goal.
