Sports facilities across Northern Ireland will get a welcome boost following the launch of a new programme by Sport NI.

Funded by the Department for Communities, the £700k ‘Building Better Sports Facilities’ programme will invest in sports facilities to deliver increased, inclusive and safe sustained participation in sport. The programme is open from 9am on Friday 17 September and closes at 12pm on Monday 4 October 2021.

CEO of Sport NI, Antoinette McKeown, said “Sport NI has supported the recovery of the sport sector with a number of programmes following the devastating impacts of COVID19. Engaging with Sports Governing Bodies, sport clubs and organisations has been key in informing this work, and allowed us to respond to the evolving needs of the sector. Sport NI’s most recent Engagement Survey identified sports facilities as a priority for improvement.

“Sport has shown incredible resilience and adaptability to embrace new ways of working, many of which have had to be put in place at speed. Some of those changes may be required in the longer term as we adjust to the new normal. With individual grants available of up to £25k, this particular programme will cover improvements to changing rooms, toilets, carparks, pathways and ancillary facilities that benefit all users.”
