John Minnis Estate Agents are delighted to renew and continue their sponsorship of the John Minnis Burney Cup in 2023. John Minnis Estate Agents, with offices in Holywood, Donaghadee, Ballyhackamore, Bangor and Comber, have sponsored the Burney Cup in previous years and jumped at the opportunity once again. Specialising in properties located province-wide and offering an expansive portfolio of properties and range of property services, John Minnis Estate Agents is an ideal sponsor for the Burney Cup. It is played for by Ulster schoolboy seniors and is held in the spring term of each school year.

John Minnis himself is a fan of sport, and indeed of hockey. There are currently 4 members of the John Minnis Estate Agent staff that play hockey. Amy Kimber plays for QUB, Amy Cooke plays for Pegasus HC, Stephen McLean plays for Bangor HC and Ross McKnight plays for Instonians HC. John Minnis himself said that, “the Burney Cup is a fantastic opportunity for us to be involved with a national sport such as hockey, and to help with its youth development. Supporting the Burney Cup and keeping it running gives schoolboy’s province-wide the opportunity to compete against their peers, promoting exercise, fitness and hockey as a sport. At John Minnis Estate Agents we strive to do business differently to give you the edge, similarly, teams will need a competitive edge to take home the John Minnis Burney Cup. Best of luck to everyone involved, and we can’t wait to see who takes home the cup in 2023.”

Marc Scott, CEO of Ulster Hockey had this to say about the John Minnis Burney Cup, “we are very thankful to John Minnis Estate Agents for sponsoring the Burney Cup once again this year. Sponsorship is a key part of all of our competitions, to keep them running to such a high standard as they have previously, we need the support of our sponsors, such as John Minnis Estate Agents. The Burney Cup was first played in 1920 and with the various breaks for war and the recent break due to the pandemic, we are excited for the official 100th year of the presentation of the Burney Cup next year. This year being the 99th time the trophy has been presented is an exciting prospect, and the competition has been closely fought so far. We can’t wait to see what the semi-finals bring and ultimately how the finals unfold in this 99th official year of the John Minnis Burney Cup. Congratulations to all the teams for getting this far and thank you to everyone who has supported their teams and various matches as they have happened throughout the last number of months.”

The very first Burney Cup was presented by Andrew George Burney of East Antrim Hockey Club on 22nd April 1920 to RBAI. It was a close match between RBAI and Belfast Royal Academy ending 6-1 to RBAI. All 6 goals scored AC Douglas who would go on to be an Irish rugby and cricket international. With RBAI in the semi-finals this year, will they be able to get through to the final and have a go at replicating that infamous scoreline? Come down to Stormont’s Playball pitches on Wednesday at 1pm to find out.
