Finals Week Day 2 Roundup

Finals Week Day 2 saw four more sides win silverware at Playball, Stormont but it was Rainey Endowed who were the big winners of the day.

The Magharafelt based school saw their 2nd XI crowned champions of the McDowell Cup before their U14’s lifted the Junior Cup later in the afternoon.

It was the McDowell Cup fixture which got the afternoon’s action underway as Rainey Endowed took on Royal School Armagh.

A tense game which had opportunities for both sides but neither could find a breakthrough as it finished 0-0 at full-time.

Requiring a penalty shootout to separate the sides, it was Rainey’s Amy Bothwell who converted the decisive penalty to seal silverware for her side as they ran out 3-1 winners.

Later in the afternoon Rainey Endowed were successful once more as their U14s beat Coleraine Grammar School 2-0 in a closely contested Junior Cup Final.

It was penalty corners which proved to be the difference between the sides as Alexa McCrea opened the scoring right on the whistle for half-time before teammate Sabina Bell doubled their lead in the second half.

Despite their best efforts, there was to be no response from the spirited Coleraine Grammar side as it was Rainey who ran out 2-0 winners.

There were also wins for Belfast Royal Academy and Sullivan Upper with both teams playing on the sand pitch at Playball.

First it was Sullivan Upper who lifted the Gibson Plate as they earned the biggest win of the day, beating Regent House Grammar School 4-1 before Belfast Royal Academy drew 0-0 with Wallace High School, eventually winning 3-1 in a shootout.
