John Minnis Burney Cup Semi-Finals Preview

This afternoon sees the John Minnis Burney Cup Semi-Finals take place at Havelock Park, with four sides looking to book their place in next month’s Final.

Making up the final four are Sullivan Upper, Banbridge Academy, Bangor Grammar and reigning back-to-back champions The Royal Belfast Academical Institution.

Sullivan Upper vs Banbridge Academy (1pm)

Sullivan Upper are two-time winners of the John Minnis Burney Cup but are looking to end a six-year wait to lift the trophy.

Having beaten Friends’ School Lisburn 5-0, the Holywood school now take on Banbridge Academy in a repeat of the 2015-16 Final, which saw Banbridge run out winner in a shootout.

Meanwhile, Banbridge Acadmey come into the final after their narrow 3-2 win over Wallace High School and have won the competition 14 times – more than any of the other three semi-finalists.

Having lost the McCullough Cup Final in December, they will now be hoping they can get reach the John Minnis Burney Cup Final for the fourth time in the last ten years.

Bangor Grammar School vs The Royal Belfast Academical Institution (3pm)

Looking to win the competition for a third year in a row, if they achieve that feat, they would be the first team to do so since Banbridge Academy from 2011-2013.

The side were crowned champions last season when they beat Campbell College in the showpiece final and beat Cookstown High School in the Quarter-Finals of this years compeittion, having received a ‘bye’ in the first round.

The McCullough Cup champions now take on a Bangor Grammar side who are looking to win the cup for the first time since 1983.

Having already beaten last year’s finalists Campbell College 3-1 in the Quarter-Finals, they now take on the reigning champions for a place in the final.
