MPL: Portadown continue strong start

In the Men’s Premier League, Portadown continued their strong start to the season as they beat CI Annadale 4-2 on Saturday

It was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the dying stages of the first quarter when Jamie Wright got his first goal of the season.

Midway through the second period, Ryan Bennett scored, converting a drag flick to double his side’s lead and got on the scoresheet for the third game running.

On the brink of half-time, Spencer Pinion got a goal back for his side, but the Portadown lead was soon restored midway through the third quarter when James McQuitty got on the scoresheet.

Pinion got his second of the afternoon after 54 minutes, before a second Bennett penalty corner rounded off a 4-2 win for the visitors.

In Belfast, Queen’s University dropped points for the first time this season as they were held to a 2-2 draw with South Antrim.

Oliver Patterson and Chris Henry both got on the scoresheet for the second week running for the Lisburn side, but their strikes were cancelled out by goals from Scott McCabe and Matthew Spence.

The draw keeps the students top of the division on seven points whilst South Antrim slip to sixth.

On Thursday night, Belfast Harlequins came from behind to beat North Down 2-1.

A Josh Gilmore penalty corner had given the Comber side a 1-0 lead going into the half-time break before two summer recruits helped turn the game around.

First, a James Smith reverse from the top of the circle levelled the scoring before a driving Michael Patterson run was finished off by Graham Batchelor to seal a 2-1 win.
