Beach Hockey – What is it?

Eleven-a-side, full-pitch hockey is a format that all hockey enthusiasts are familiar with, but this summer Ulster Hockey are delighted to be bringing a new format to the province.

Beach hockey is an alternative version of the game based on clever movement and creative play, which supports both the global development of hockey and enhances the skills and enjoyment of players.

How is it played?

The sport of beach hockey is played on a pitch 30-35 metres in length and 20-25 metres wide, with teams of five a side made up of one goalkeeper and four outfield players.

The first significant change is the ball. Different from the small, hard ball we are used to, beach hockey is played with a softer, bigger ball approximately 45cm in circumference.

The match starts with the ball in the middle of the pitch, whilst both teams start in their own goal, and when the whistle goes, the game starts, and one player from each team is nominated to contest the ball.

When a goal is scored, the defending team starts with a free hit inside the 5-metre zone. The ball must be stationary to restart.

In another significant change to field hockey, goalkeepers are able to score goals.

A goal may be scored when the ball has been touched by an attacker or defender (including a goalkeeper) anywhere on the field, including directly from a free hit taken by either a field player or goalkeeper, however, goalkeepers must not use their body, hands, legs or feet to score a goal for their team.

Goalkeepers are permitted to use their stick, feet or legs to propel the ball and to use their stick, feet, legs, or any other part of their body to stop the ball or deflect it in any direction, including over the back-line and are permitted to use their arms, hands and any other part of their body to push the ball away.
