Men’s Weekend Roundup

Queen’s University produced a stunning comeback to draw 3-3 with Cookstown in their opening Kirk Cup tie on Saturday afternoon

Matthew Bell’s side had trailed 3-0 before goals from Ben Law (2) and Josh Kamalarajah saw the side rescue a point.

A well worked move from the Mid-Ulster side saw Michael Kerr open the scoring before the Cookstown man got his second of the afternoon to double his side’s advantage.

The EYHL side looked to be cruising to all three points when youngster James Evans extended their lead to 3-0.

However, Ben Law continued his goalscoring form this campaign, scoring from two penalty corners to bring his tally to 14 in all competitions before a Josh Kamalarajah strike saw the sides draw 3-3.

In the Kirk Cup’s only all-Premier League affair, South Antrim continued their fine form as they beat North Down 4-1.

After a goalless first half, the Lisburn side stormed to a 3-0 lead with Max Taylor and Callum Patterson both profiting from good work from Lee Marshall before Chris Henry’s deflected effort.

David Morris then gave the visitors a lifeline when he got a goal back to bring the scoreline to 3-1.

However, it didn’t take long for Harry Yarr to restore the three-goal lead for South Antrim as it finished 4-1 to the Lisburn side.

In Pool B, Banbridge made sure they avoided another cup upset against Bangor as they won 7-1.

Owen McElheenny and Adam McKee both struck twice for the EYHL side alongside goals from Jake Rowe, Edward Rowe and Callum Robson to seal a resounding win.

Meanwhile, Paddy Mayne got a consolation effort for the hosts, scoring his first goal of the season.

The victory rectifies last season’s defeat for Banbridge, after Bangor knocked them out of the Anderson Cup at the Semi-Final stage.

In the Ulster Premier League, Belfast Harlequins made it four games without defeat as they beat CI Annadale 3-1.

Robyn Quigley gave Quins the lead when he reacted quickest at a penalty corner to score a rebound after an initial save from goalkeeper Scott Dale.

A Spencer Pinion penalty corner saw the hosts equalise before Davy Fraser restored the Harlequins lead with just seven minutes remaining.

Michael Patterson’s aerial found Frazer in space before he calmly slotted underneath the onrushing Dale.

The win was then sealed when Matthew Gray led the counter attack before finding youngster Ewan Hutchinson who added a third goal to make it 3-1.

The win sees Harlequins move to within six points of the EYHL2 qualification places with a game in hand of the sides above them.
