MPL: Three sides maintain 100% records

Queen’s University, Intsonians and Mossley all maintained their 100% starts to the Men’s Premier League with wins on Saturday afternoon.

Following the weekend’s action, it is the student side who stay top of the division on goal difference having beaten Portadown 4-2 at Edenvilla.

Ryan Bennett continued his fine start to the season when he opened the scoring with ten minutes on the clock, scoring from a penalty corner and bringing his tally for the season to five.

However, two goals from JJ Holley and a strike from Scott McCabe turned the game on its head as Queen’s took a 3-1 lead by the third quarter.

Ben Gordon thought he had got his side back into the game with ten minutes remaining when his strike reduced the deficit to just one, before JJ Holley completed his hat-trick to seal a 4-2 win for his side.

Elsewhere, Mossley also won for the second week running as they came out on top in a 9-goal thriller against North Down.

It was the Comber side who struck first, with Scott Graham giving his side an early lead, but their hosts quickly turned the game around.

Three goals from Neal Glassey, as well as strikes from Cody Walker and Matthew Steele gave the side a 5-1 lead before Josh Gilmore got a second for the visitors.

Jason Roe and Frazer McKane struck at either end to round off the scoring and it was Mossley who took all three points with a 6-3 win over North Down.

At Shaw’s Bridge, Instonians beat local rivals Belfast Harlequins 3-0 to make it back-to-back wins at the start of the season.

Stephen Kelso and Ben Palmer both scored for the second game in a row, whilst youngster Jacob McIlhatton also got on the scoresheet to seal the win.

The win sees Mark Evans’ side climb to third in the table, behind Mossley on goals scored in second.

In Lisburn, South Antrim bounced back from an opening day defeat to Belfast Harlequins to beat Bangor 7-1.

The game was the first meeting between the two sides since last season’s Anderson Cup Final, when Bangor won their first-ever major silverware, but on this occasion it was South Antrim who put on a dominant display.

Goals from Chris Henry and Oliver Patterson had given the side a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, with Max Watson giving his side a lifeline.

However, from then on it was all South Antrim as Harry Yarr extended the lead to 3-1 at half-time before second half goals from Max Taylor (2), Callum Patterson and a second from Chris Henry sealed the emphatic win and moved the side to fourth in the division.

Meanwhile, Bangor sit at the foot of the table as one of only two sides to lose both their opening fixtures.

The final game of the weekend saw another high-scoring game with CI Annadale and Kilkeel playing out an entertaining 4-4 draw.

Spencer Pinion (2), Michael Girvan and Sam Anderson all got on the scoresheet for the Belfast side but were cancelled out by strikes from Mark Stevenson (2), Ashton Graham and Jordan McCartan as the sides had to share the spoils.
