MPL: Top three all secure wins

Queen’s University continued their unbeaten start in the Men’s Premier League as they beat high-flying Portadown 2-0.

The win sees the side extend their unbeaten run in the division to 15 games as they sit top with a five-point gap to second-placed South Antrim

Ben Law opened the scoring for the home side, converting with a drag flick from a penalty corner. Meanwhile, a Mark Barlow strike rounded off the win as he scored his second goal of the season.

The loss sees Portadown’s winless run extend to three games as they slip to sixth place in the table.

Elsewhere, South Antrim continued their fine form as they thrashed Bangor 5-1 to win for a five consecutive game.

Jacob Hermon got the scoring underway for the Lisburn side as he brilliantly picked out the top corner after being left unmarked in the circle.

Meanwhile Max Taylor continued his form in front of goal before further strikes from Ben Clakre and Harry Yarr put the result beyond doubt.

The win was then rounded of when David Gallagher picked out the bottom corner with a drag flick and capped off a dominant win for South Antrim.

In Comber, third-placed Mossley left it late to beat North Down 4-3, having come back from a 3-1 down.

An early Ross McIvor strike gave Mossley the lead before bottom of the league North Down turned the game on its head.

Mark Shannon scored for the second week running as he netted a quickfire hat-trick to give his side a 3-1 lead.

It was a lead that his side would hold until the final quarter of the game until Rhys Wilson scored alongside two Neal Glassey penalty corners as Mossley snatched all three points late on.

Glassey’s two goals bring his season’s tally to 15, the most of anyone in the division as his side stay in the EYHL2 places.

At Deramore Park, Belfast Harlequins and Instonians proved inseparable as the sides played out a 0-0 draw.

Despite the two previous meetings between these sides having seen a combined 11 goals, neither side was able to find a breakthrough as they had to settle for a point each.

Following the stalemate, Instonians remain fourth in the division, three points outside the EYHL2 qualification places, whilst Harlequins remain seventh.

The final game of the day saw CI Annadale beat Kilkeel 3-2 with goals from Spencer Pinion, Adam Duffield and Matthew Willis.

The result sees the side climb back into the top half and get back to winning ways after three games without picking up all three points.
