MPL: Weekend Preview

It’s Derby Day in the Men’s Premier League as Belfast Harlequins host Instonians at Deramore Park.

The last time these sides met at Deramore, it was Quins who came out on top with a 5-3 win on the final day of last season.

That day forward Cameron Ruttle netted a hat-trick for his side and he comes into this tie in fine form, scoring in each of his side’s last four games.

However, Instonians also have plenty of scoring prowess with Stephen Kelso and Ben Palmer having netted 17 times between them this season.

Should the duo help their side to all three points this weekend, they could climb as high as second in the table.

At The Dub, league leaders Queen’s University host Portadown in a top of the table clash.

Matthew Bell’s side sit top of the division with a five-point gap to nearest challengers Mossley, whilst a win could see Portadown climb into second spot.

The sides have already met this season, with the students coming out on top with a 4-2 win at Edenvilla thanks to a JJ Holley hat-trick.

Looking to rectify the loss, Portadown now come into this tie in need of a win, having had just one in their last five league outings.

Elsewhere, Bangor host South Antrim in a repeat of last season’s Anderson Cup Final.

The home side have proven hard to beat this season, losing just three of their opening eight league games, but too many draws sees the side languishing in eighth place.

They come into the tie off the back of just their second win of the season when goals from Paddy Brown (2), Scott McGilton and Chris Campbell sealed a 4-3 victory over Kilkeel.

Opponents South Antrim come into the game as one of the division’s in form teams. The Lisburn side have won their last four games and should they pick up all three points this weekend, they could move to within two points of top spot.

At CIYMS, CI Annadale host Kilkeel as they look to break back into the top half of the division.

Without a win in their last three league games, the side have slipped to sixth in the league table and are currently five points off the EYHL2 places.

Meanwhile, their opponents are looking to close the gap to automatic safety to two points.

Kilkeel currently occupy the relegation playoff place and are five points behind eighth-place Bangor but come into the weekend having lost their last three league ties.

The final game on Saturday, sees North Down continue their hunt for a first win of the season as they host second-placed Mossley.

The Comber side sit bottom of the division with just one point this season and are currently eight points away from guaranteed safety.

They now face the uphill task of an in-form Mossley side with two wins in their last three games and having scored 12 goals in that time.

Meanwhile, the division’s top scorer Neal Glassey has continued his fine form in front of goal, netting four in his last three.
