Regent House win cup double at Finals Week

Regent House rounded off Boys’ Finals Week with a Taylor Cup and Richardson Plate double this afternoon.

Having beat Friends’ School Lisburn 4-1 in the Richardson Plate, the side won the Taylor Cup with a 2-1 victory over Kilkeel High School to complete an impressive day for the school.

In the Richardson Plate Final, Regent House thought they had taken the lead with just one minute on the clock when Josh Gill fired a reverse effort into the top corner from a penalty corner, but the goal was ruled out for being above the back board.

It remained 0-0 until the second quarter, when Gill got his goal after beating several Friends’ defenders before firing in from close range.

Just five minutes later Gill doubled both his and his sides tally for the afternoon, firing in a second goal for Regent House with another reverse effort.

The Newtonards school started the second half equally as quick, extending their lead to 3-0 with just one minute gone.

Gill was again involved as he picked out the unmarked Caleb Beattie at the back post who slapped in with a first time effort at the back post.

With just four minutes remaining in the quarter, Jack Bright extended his sides lead to 4-0 as Regent caught Friends’ on the break before firing in from close range.

As the game reached its final stages, Friends’ were awarded a penalty corner which saw Carter Lunn fire his well struck effort into the bottom left corner to get a goal back for his side.

The goal proved to be the final strike of the game with Regent House being crowned champions with a 4-1 win

In the Taylor Cup Final it was Kilkeel High School who got off to a flying start as Robert McBride fired his side into the lead with ten minutes played.

However, it was Regent House who struck next. Midway through the second quarter the side were level with Josh Gill playing and scoring in his second game of the afternoon to send the sides into the half-time break at a 1-1 stalemate.

Shortly after the break it Regent House were in front as Gill struck once more. Having won a penalty corner the centre forward beat the first runner before firing his side in front for the first time in the tie.

On the final whistle, the side wrapped up their win with a goal from the last touch of the game. Having been awarded a penalty corner on the buzzer, an initial strike was saved before Harry McLaughlin reacted quickest tap in the rebound and seal a 3-1 win.
