Weekend Roundup

In the Men’s Premier League, Belfast Harlequins recorded their biggest win of the season as they thrashed Anderson Cup Finalists Bangor 8-1 at Deramore Park.

Forward Matthew Gray continued his fine run of form, opening the scoring after just five minutes to score for the third week running.

Just moments later he got his and Harlequins second of the afternoon as he was left unmarked in the circle and picked out by teammate Stephen McGrath before Cameron Ruttle added a third in quick succession.

Things went from bad to worse for their visitors as Gray completed his first quarter hat-trick on the brink of the break, netting from a penalty corner to give his side a 4-0 lead.

The Harlequins route continued in the second quarter as youngster Pierce Connolly and Owen Creighton combined before the latter converted his first goal of the season to make it 5-0.

In quarter three, Gray continued his terrific form in front of goal, netting two more penalty corners to bring his tally to five for the afternoon whilst McGrath scored his first of the season to make it 8-0.

The visitors did manage a late consolation goal, but it was Harlequins who secured all three points with a dominant display.

In Comber, Queen’s University came from behind to win a 10-goal-thriller and move into fifth in the table.

A hat-trick from top goalscorer Gareth McKeown and a strike from Josh Gilmore had given the hosts a 4-2 lead, however goals from Ben Law (4), Philip Campbell and Adam Reddick saw the student side turn the game on its head to leave with all three points.

The defeat for North down sees them remain ninth in the table, seven points behind eighth placed Kilkeel, but having played two more games

The final men’s game of the weekend saw Portadown bounce back from a midweek defeat to Cookstown to beat PSNI 2-1 at Edenvilla.

In the Legacy Wealth Management Premier League, Armagh ended their long wait for a win as they beat Banbridge 2-0 at Havelock Park.

Lydia Thompson opened the scoring late in the first quarter, converting from a tight angle before Scarlett Taylor scored in the final period, rounding off a counter attack to seal all three points for her side.

The win sees Armagh move three points ahead of ninth placed Ballymoney whilst also having a game in hand. Meanwhile, the result also means Banbridge will finish bottom of the table.

However, any potential relegation from the division is dependent on Ulster sides promotion/relegation to/from the EYHL.
