Weekend Roundup

In the Legacy Wealth Management Premier League, champions Queen’s University reclaimed top spot with an 8-0 win over bottom of the league Banbridge.

The league leaders got off to flying start with strikes from Jodie Simmons, Zoe Wilson and Kaia Moore firing the side into a quick 3-0 lead.

Things went from bad to worse for Banbridge with Queen’s being awarded a penalty stroke before the half-time break with Ellie Montgomery converting from the spot.

In the second half two goals from Jenna McCarlie alongside Zoe Wilson wrapping up her hat-trick saw the side ramp up an 8-0 scoreline and rounded off a perfect afternoon for the side.

The win sees the students go three points clear at the top with title rivals Portadown being out of league action this weekend.

Meanwhile, Banbridge remain bottom of the division without a win this campaign.

In the Men’s Premier League, Belfast Harlequins sealed their fourth win in five league games as they came from behind to beat Portadown at Deramore Park.

It was the visitors who took the lead with just three minutes on the clock when a Quins defender diverted into his own net.

However, the lead didn’t last for long as immediately from the restart, Matthew Gray found teammate Cameron Ruttle and he levelled the scoring once more.

Midway through the second quarter Gray turned provider once more. The forward broke down the left wing before picking out Aaron Murphy who was left unmarked at the back post and tapped in for a 2-1 lead.

A late James Hutchinson penalty corner then sealed the victory with the midfielder picking out the bottom left corner with a drag flick.

The win sees Harlequins climb to fourth in the division, three points off third-placed South Antrim but with two games in hand as they race for EYHL2 hockey looks set to go to the wire.

Elsewhere, South Antrim for a second week running as they beat PSNI 3-2 at Friends’ School Lisburn.

Callum Patterson got the first South goal of the afternoon, cutting in from the right wing before picking out the bottom corner on the reverse before Chris Henry fired in from the top of the circle.

Lee Marshall deflected in at the back post to wrap up the narrow victory with two goals from PSNI not enough to earn them anything from the tie.

The final game of the weekend saw Bangor draw 3-3 away to Queen’s University.
