Weekend Roundup: Queen’s University crowned champions

Queen’s University were crowned champions of the Legacy Wealth Management Premier League as they beat Armagh 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The win sees the side win the division for a second consecutive season after a closely fought title race with Portadown.

Following their midweek upset to beat Lurgan, Armagh put up another impressive display to hold the champions to 0-0 until the third quarter.

The deadlock was then finally broken when Megan Cochrane fired in to finish off a free-flowing team move but they continued to not get things all their own way.

Their hosts struck back in quick succession as Daisy Nicholson deflected in from a Grace McCool penalty corner to level the scoring but ultimately Simon Bell’s side got their winner, with Katie Kimber sealing a late 2-1 victory to secure the title.

Elsewhere in the division, Portadown ended their league campaign with a comfortable 6-0 win over mid-table Omagh.

Goals from Evie Girvan (2), Katie Herron (2), Beth Harper and Lara Wilson sealed the emphatic win for the league runners-up in their final league game of the season.

Despite missing out on the title, the side could still achieve promotion to the EYHL as they now prepare to face Corinthians in their EYHL2 Semi-Final.

In the Men’s Premier League Cookstown moved four points clear at the top as they thrashed PSNI 10-0 at home.

The win is the second time in five days that the Mid-Ulster side have beaten Saturday’s opposition, having won 2-0 midweek.

Jack Haycock scored three penalty corners to add to the two goals he scored midweek whilst Greg Allen (2), Mark Cuddy (2), Ethan Redford, Scott McCabe and Michael Kerr rounded off a dominant performance for the league leaders.

The heavy defeat marks the end of the season for PSNI who finish bottom of the division.

Elsewhere, Queen’s University ended their season on a high, thrashing Kilkeel 9-3.

Ben Law continued his fine form this season, scoring two penalty corners to bring his tally to the season to 18 – a league high whilst Philip Campbell scored for a third consecutive game.

Further goals from Harry Scott (2), Stephen Hamill, Sam McMillan, Matthew Spence and Adam Reddick rounded off the win and sees the side climb into third in the division.

Meanwhile, now without a win in their last five league outings, Kilkeel remain eighth in the division where they are confirmed to finish.

The final game of the weekend saw Portadown come out on top in a seven goal thriller at Edenvilla.

Four goals from Jamie Wright, Josh Rowe, Ryan Bennett and James McQuitty sealed the win despite strikes from Ryan Burgess (2) and a first goal of the season for Myles McNaught.

The win sees Portadown end their season with three consecutive wins whilst Bangor finish seventh.
