Lisnagarvey annouce the passing of Michael Bowden

Everyone at Ulster Hockey is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Michael Bowden, a Lisnagarvey Garvey stalwart, fondly known as ‘Bowdie’.

A lifelong member of Lisnagarvey Hockey Club, Bowden represented the club for many years and was twice selected as captain of the 1st XI, first in 1969 before taking up the role seven years later in 1976, meanwhile, he was also selected to represent Ireland in 1969.

Off the pitch, he also fulfilled many other responsibilities, including Club Chairman from 1999 to 2001 before becoming Club President in 2014 until 2016.

He also held the role of Secretary for over 25 years and has been described by the club as “the engine room of our Men’s Section.”

In a statement on their social media platforms, Lisnagarvey Hockey Club said:

“Bowdie had great pride in the history and tradition of our Club and was always keen and forthright that we upheld the Garvey way of doing things.

We remember fondly his many trips to support our 1st XI all over Ireland and Europe and no away trip was complete without the double act of Bowdie & his great friend Wally (Mercer) providing enthusiastic vocal support along with freely given post-match analysis!

Bowdie will be sorely missed by his many Garvey friends as in recent years our ‘golden oldies’ enjoyed watching our 1st XI in his company.

We give the Club’s deepest sympathies to his wife Valerie, son Kevin, daughter Jenny and the wider family circle.

All Clubs have individuals who are cornerstones and we have lost one of ours with Bowdie’s passing.

We are very grateful for all that Bowdie gave us – he was a ‘True Blue’ – may he rest in peace”
