MPL: Queen’s continue unbeaten start to the season

Queen’s University maintained their lead at the top of the Men’s Premier League as they sealed a convincing 6-1 win away to Belfast Harlequins.

Goals from Ben Law (2), JJ Holley, Harris Massey, Charlie McKeown and Jack Mulholland sealed the win for Matthew Bell’s side, who have won four of their five league games this season.

The win also sees the students’ unbeaten run grow to 11 games, whilst Harlequins remain sixth in the division, having lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.

In Comber, CI Annadale continued their charge up the table as they beat bottom of the league North Down 4-0.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the second quarter when David Tremlett was left with a tap-in at the back post after a well-worked move down the left flank.

In the third period, a drag flick from Adam Duffield doubled the lead before late goals from Harry Thompson and Josh Cree rounded off a comfortable win for the visitors.

Following their win, Dale climbed to fourth in the division, with the gap to leaders Queen’s University just three points.

At Shaw’s Bridge, Instonians ended their run of three games without a win as they beat Kilkeel 5-1.

Goals from Stephen Kelso (2), Jacob McIlhatton and a first of the season from youngster Frank Hollway sealed the win for Mark Evans’ side despite a consolation strike from Kilkeel’s Jordan McCartan.

After a third defeat in four games this season, Kilkeel remain second bottom in the division ahead of a trip to Deramore Park in two weeks time.

At Friends’ School Lisburn, South Antrim and Portadown proved inseparable as they played out a 2-2 draw.

Jamie Wright opened the scoring for the visitors with 10 minutes played before Max Taylor equalised before the end of the first quarter with his fourth goal of the season.

However, midway through the second half, Wright struck for the second time in the game to restore his sides advantage and give them a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Unfortunately, his side were unable to see the game out, as they were pegged back once more as Peter Miligan’s second-half strike earned a hard-fought point for the hosts.

The final game of the weekend saw Bangor and Mossley also share the spoils as they played out a 3-3 draw.

The Anderson Cup champions continued their fine form in front of goal, with Ryan Lyall, Stuart Wilson and Dave McClune all getting on the scoresheet.

However, former Ireland international Neal Glassey proved to be the star performer for his side once more, netting a hat-trick to bring his season’s tally to nine – the most of any player in the division.
