It was a weekend of upsets in the Men’s Premier League as four of the top five sides in the division dropped points on Saturday afternoon.
Amongst the surprise results, North Down got their first point of the season as they drew 2-2 with high-flying Portadown, whilst Kilkeel got a first win of the campaign as they won away to Belfast Harlequins.
In Comber, North Down ended a run of eight straight losses in the division as they drew with Portadown.
Youngster Paddy Smith opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with his first goal of the season, scoring from a solo effort, beating several Portadown defenders before squeezing his effort in at the near post.
The hosts then doubled their lead at the beginning of the third quarter when Connor Tweedie deflected in to make it 2-0, before their visitors turned the game on its head.
With 45 minutes on the clock, their visitors were awarded a penalty stroke with Ryan Bennett giving his side a lifeline from the spot before he got his second of the afternoon from a penalty corner with just seven minutes remaining.
The goal brings his tally to ten for the season – the first player in either Premier League to do so this season.
At Deramore Park, Kilkeel got their first league win in 14 games as they beat Belfast Harlequins 4-3.
Goals from David Rae, Mark Stevenson, Taylor McConnell and Mark Henning sealed the win for the visitors despite three Quins strikes from Matthew Gray, James Hutchinson and Cameron Ruttle.
Following the win, Kilkeel remain ninth in the division, but are now just two points from safety and with a game in hand over eighth-placed Harlequins.
Elsewhere, South Antrim extended their unbeaten run to three games as they beat Instonians 4-2 at Shaw’s Bridge.
Inst forward, Stephen Kelso brought his tally for the season to nine as he scored both his sides goals on Saturday afternoon but they were cancelled out by goals from Max Taylor, Peter Milligan and David Gallagher (2) for an away win.
The result sees the Lisburn side seal back-to-back wins for the first time this season, whilst Instonians are now on a run of just one win in their last five.
At The Dub, Queen’s University ensured they stayed top of the division with a convincing 6-1 win over title rivals Mossley.
A Ben Law hat-trick and goals from Charlie McKeown, Philip Campbell and Sam McMillan sealed the win and extended their unbeaten run to 12 games.
Meanwhile, following their second defeat in a row, Mossley slip out of the EYHL2 places into sixth.
The final game of the weekend saw Bangor and CI Annadale prove inseparable as they drew 1-1.
Scott McGilton got on the scoresheet for the hosts, whilst Adam Duffield scored for Dale in his first appearance against the side he left in the summer.
Following the result, Bangor sit seventh in the league whilst CI Annadale climb to second.
