Royal Belfast Academical Institution retained the John Minnis Burney Cup with a 4-1 victory over Campbell College at Havelock Park.
Two goals from Man of the Match John Cunningham and strikes from Michael Hollway and Jacob McIlhatton sealed the win for the Belfast school.
It was Campbell College who got off to a quick start as Rory Johnson caught the reigning champions on the break before he was denied by Sam Holmes who was quick off his line.
RBAI saw their first chance of the game with just seven mintues played when Toby Lyons’ aerial found Matthew McAreavey in the circle before his shot was well saved by Thomas Costello.
However, the deadlock was finally broken on the brink of the first stoppage when RBAI were awarded a penalty corner.
Forward John Cunningham stepped over the set play and converted with a perfect drag flick into the corner, scoring for the second final in a row.
Then, just a minute into the second quarter, Cunningham was on hand again to double his sides lead with an almost identical strike from a second corner.
With 20 minutes gone the forward nearly completed his hat-trick. Once again from a corner, he saw his third effort strike off the post before Campbell College cleared the danger.
However, just five minutes later Campbell’s luck was out once more. Again from a set play, Inst added a third goal, this time midfielder Bruce MacDonald saw his effort deflected in by Michael Hollway arriving at the back post to set his side on their way to the title.
In the second half, the RBAI onslaught continued as Jacob McIlhatton added a fourth strike in the 39th minute of the tie before the reigning champions could have added a fifth on the buzzer for the end of quarter three when they were awarded a penalty stroke.
However, with a chance to complete his hat-trick, John Cunningham saw his effort come back off the crossbar as it remained 4-0.
Then, as the sides entered the final quarter, it was Campbell College who struck back.
An aerial into the circle found forward Frazer McCain on the byline before he brilliantly struck in at the near post with an upright reversed volley to give his side a potential lifeline.
Boosted by their goal, the trailing side began to push forward and created several goal-scoring opportunities but to no avail.
However, unable to capitalise on their pressure and with time running out, it was The Royal Belfast Academical Institution who saw out the final moments to be crowned champions for a second consecutive season.
