Women’s Weekend Preview

Pegasus host Lurgan in the Denman Shield as they look to bounce back from their opening defeat from Queen’s University.

The 2023/24 champions need to win the fixture, or they face elimination from the competition at the group stage.

Last weekend, a goal from Lucy McKee had given the side a 1-0 lead; however, late goals from Megan Cochrane and Jenna McCarlie saw Queen’s University take all three points.

Hoping to return to winning ways, Johnny Caren’s side now face an in-form Lurgan side who sit third in the Legacy Wealth Management Premier League.

Since a loss to Ards on the opening day of the season, Andy Brown’s side have won six of their last seven league outings, including each of their last three.

They are also led by Lydia McNeill, with the Lurgan woman having hit a run of form in recent weeks, which has seen her score six goals in her last seven games.

Elsewhere, Banbridge and Ulster Elks get their competition up and running as they meet at Havelock Park.

The home side come into the tie as underdogs, coming from a league below their visitors, but with both sides in need of a win.

Most recently, they earned an impressive 2-2 draw with high-flying Belfast Harlequins on Monday evening, with top scorer Stef Ardis netting twice to end a run of three straight losses

Meanwhile, opponents Ulster Elks come into the weekend having been out of action for two weeks and having had a difficult start to the season.

The reigning champions of the Denman Shield, they have won just two of their 11 league games this term.

The final game of Saturday’s action sees Larne host Mossley in the Legacy Wealth Management Premier League.

The home side come into the weekend off the back of a midweek defeat to Ards, when two Zara Malseed strikes condemned them to a 2-0 loss.

The loss extended their losing run in the division to six games as they remain seventh in the table.

However, last weekend’s Denman Shield clash with Ballymoney saw the side secure a cup win when goals from Selina Lewis (2) sealed a 2-1 win for the side.

They now take on a Mossley side who could climb into EYHL2 contention should they win their games in hand.

Having played at least one game less than each of the top three, Davy Menaul’s side sit six points off the final qualification place.

However, the side have struggled to find consistency this season, winning their last outing with goals from Kate Spillane and Lucy Campbell, but having lost three of their last six.

There is also one game this evening as Lisnagarvey host Armagh at Comber Road.

A recent defeat to Ards has seen the hosts slip outside the EYHL2 places on goal difference with the side looking to return to winning ways.

Prior to that loss, the side had won four in a row, including a 3-1 win over Armagh with goals from Beth McFerran (2) and Shannon King.

Now looking to rectify that defeat, the visitors could also end a run of five games without a win in the division.
