Ulster Hockey is delighted to announce the Under 16 and Under 18 boys’ squads for the forthcoming Hockey Ireland Interprovincial Tournament 2020.
As with the underage girls’ groups, the boys faced a number of months away from the hockey pitch but since July they have been training twice a week and have committed fully to their respective programmes. The standard of both groups has been high and this has made for competitive sessions and plenty of selection headaches.
Under 16 boy’ Head Coach Scott McCandless commented:
“We are very happy with the program and the progress this talented bunch have made since the restart, it’s been a challenging time but the response from players, parents and the clubs has been second to none. I’d like to thank Ulster Hockey and all the Volunteers at Lisnagarvey, Instonians & Banbridge that have enabled training and matches to take place safely. The boys are looking forward to the opportunity to compete and if we continue with the same intensity of late they will be an exciting team to watch and achieve what they deserve.”
Under 18 boys’ Head Coach Stephen Cuddy commented:
“There is no doubt 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone but it has been refreshing to get back on the hockey pitch with a strong group of talented boys and have a sense of normality again. The group moving up from the U16s last season have brought energy and alongside those returning from last year we have a squad who are very competitive, have trained well and push each other at each session. They have been a pleasure to work with and we are looking forward to competing in a few weeks’ time.
Ulster Hockey Talent Coach Shirley McCay commented:
“Since we have been able to return to hockey in July, it has been fantastic to see both the underage staff and players commit to their respective programmes. Everyone has had to adapt and I am extremely grateful to the coaches, parents and coaching staff who have invested in the cause, adopted all of the new safety measures we have put in place and shown so much commitment to giving these boys their chance to play for Ulster. It is a testament to them that we are looking forward to playing some competitive hockey in a few weeks’ time and I am excited to watch some quality underage hockey. Playing for your province is always a special occasion and given the circumstances it is a particularly monumental achievement of which the players should be very proud.”
