The John Waring U14 Cup will take place on Wednesday at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club.
The competition will see the best school sides from Ulster, Leinster and Munster compete against one and other and is in memory of John Waring.
Six teams will compete with two representing each province; Ashton Comprehensive, Bandon Grammar School (Munster), Wesley College, The High School Dublin (Leinster), RBAI and Cookstown (Ulster).
Ahead of the tournament, John’s son Brian released a statement.
“School hockey was something that was extremely important to my father. He would have been very pleased to know that the best young players from across the island were being presented with the opportunity to test their skills against each other.
It is reassuring to see that the future of Irish hockey is in safe hands with teams from these schools continuing to come to the fore on a consistent basis.
However, of even greater importance to him, was the idea of building friendship through sport. Involvement in schools’ hockey brought my father into contact with a large number of people from across the length and breadth of Ireland and he placed an extremely high importance on friendships that were built in the process.
He would be delighted to know that this competition will play a part in allowing others to develop such friendships.”
Meanwhile Ulster Hockey President George Wilson also released a statement ahead of Wednesday.
“As always a sincere thanks to the Waring family for the dedication to boys hockey across Ireland and to Lisnagarvey for the use of their splendid facilitites.
On behalf of Ulster Hockey, best wishes to our finalists and we trust that they enjoy such an auspicious occasion representing their schools in the John Waring Cup competition.”
The tournament is set to get underway at 10am and will run until approximately 3pm with each fixture set to be 20 minutes. All sides will face each other once and the team with the most points from their five games will be declared Champions.
