It is with profound sadness that Ulster Hockey shares the news of the passing of Ian Raphael, a legend of Lisnagarvey Hockey Club.
A skilful midfielder Ian represented Lisngarvey, Ulster and Ireland with his first International Cap coming in 1969 before going on to represent Ireland in their first World Cup in Argentina.
He would go on to win 70 International Caps during a period which saw the side win the Santander International Tournament 1972 and the Intercontinental Cup in Rome 1977, he was later inducted into the Irish Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
At club level he represented Lisnagarvey First XI for many years and is known for being an integral part in ending the club’s 17 year wait for the Irish Senior Cup in 1987/88 in their first year at their ‘New Blaris’ Sprucefield grounds.
Raphael had great longevity in the game and continued to represent Garvey’ 1st XI until his early forties due to his amazing athleticism and hockey ability.
Upon retiring from Senior Hockey Ian was known to support his son Mark when he was playing for the various Lisnagarvey sides. Meanwhile he also coached for the club, whilst his most recent post was umpiring for the 2nd and 3rd XI’s
The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Ulster Hockey go to Ian’s wife Alison as well as their children Mark, Clare and the immediate family.
There will be a minute’s silence ahead of tomorrow’s Anderson Cup Final between Lisnagarvey and Banbridge.
