Ulster Hockey is delighted to announce Joel Cathcart as our new Talent & Pathways Officer.
The role will see him contribute to strengthening and embedding the talent development system in hockey as well as the success of both Ulster Hockey and Ulster University in developing talented players, allowing them to reach their full potential.
Cathcart has amassed great experience in local hockey as both a player and coach and is the current 1st XI Coach at Ulster Elks, who last season won the Legacy Wealth Management Premiership with a 100% record.
Speaking on his new role, the 27-year-old said he is looking forward to continuing the work of Shirley McCay.
“I am delighted to join Ulster Hockey in the role of Talent & Pathways Officer.
I think it is an exciting time to work on our talent programmes and pathways. I am looking forward to building upon the work that Shirley McCay and Ulster Hockey have been doing with the support of the University of Ulster and Hockey Ireland.”
Additionally, Ulster Hockey Chief Executive Marc Scott believes that Cathcart will be a ‘great asset to the team’.

Joel is one of the most exciting up-and-coming coaches in Ulster and will be a great asset to the team.
This new post in Ulster Hockey is supported by Ulster University as part of our long-standing partnership.
In addition to ensuring our young members are aware of the third-level opportunities available to them locally, this partnership will allow us to collaboratively support our members to achieve their potential.
In his new role, Joel will play an integral role in developing the future generation of talented hockey players in Ulster and the whole Ulster Hockey team look forward to working closely over the coming years and seeing our talent system evolve.”
Meanwhile, the appointment was made possible with the help of Ulster University Sport who are funding the position and have committed a significant investment in Ulster Hockey.
Nigel Dobson, Head of Sport Services at the University believes Cathcart has a number of qualities that makes him the ideal appointment.
