Queen’s University got their first win of their EYHL2 campaign as they beat Bandon 5-2 at The Dub yesterday afternoon.
The victory comes at the fourth attempt following three successive losses in the competition.
Philip Campbell broke the deadlock for the students with just five minutes on the clock after a brilliant move down the right flank.
The visitors drew level midway through the second period when Fionn O’Leary’s strike found the bottom corner, but just three minutes later QUB were back in front courtesy of an Adam Reddick strike.
Captain Scott McCabe doubled the home advantage when he struck in the 31st minute of the game before two more goals from Harry Scott in the third quarter put the result beyond doubt.
David Smith got a goal back for Bandon in the final period, but it proved to be solely a consolation effort as Queen’s University ran out 5-2 winners.
In Pool B Cookstown beat South Antrim for a second time this week as they won 4-0 in Lisburn.
A hat-trick from Daniel Kerr and a strike from teammate Ryan Millar sealed the victory which makes it three wins from four games for the Mid-Ulster side.
Meanwhile, Cookstown were crowned champions of the Men’s Premier League as title rivals Kilkeel dropped points at home to Belfast Harlequins.
The visitors took the lead in the dying stages of the first half through Matthew Gray but couldn’t hold out for all three points as William Annett rescued a draw for the hosts.
The result leaves the County Down side eight points behind the league leaders with just two games remaining and ultimately hands Cookstown the title whilst they themselves are guaranteed a second-place finish this campaign.
At the opposite end of the table Raphoe’s fate was sealed as they lost 4-3 away to NICS in a relegation six-pointer.
Two goals from Chris McRoberts and strikes from Josh Fiddis and Ben McKinstry sealed the win for ninth place NICS and condemned Raphoe to the second tier.
Elsewhere North Down gave their survival chances a massive boost after a shock 3-2 win away to Portadown.
Three goals from Gareth Bailie, Connor Tweedie and Mark Shannon gave the visitors a 3-0 lead by the third quarter.
Despite a nervous ending to the game which saw Portadown get to goals back the visitors held out for a 3-2 and kept the gap to NICS at four points.
