U16 boys earn hard-fought draw with Scotland

The Ulster U16 boys earned a 1-1 draw in their final game against Scotland, bringing an end to their three-match series at UUJ this weekend.

Cookstown’s Josh Ferguson had given the hosts an early lead before Scotland drew level at the end of the first quarter, leaving the sides inseparable.

Midway through the first quarter, it was Ulster who won the game’s first penalty corner and took an early lead in the tie.

Josh Ferguson saw his initial strike saved by the Scottish goalkeeper before reacting quickest to the rebound and picking out the far corner on his reverse to break the deadlock.

However, the lead wouldn’t last for long as Scotland drew back level just five minutes later when a Scottish forward struck from the top of the circle and picked out the near bottom corner.

With both sides cancelling each other out for much of the game, they went into the first break level at 1-1 before a quiet start to the second quarter.

The best chance of the second period saw Ferguson involved once more,  breaking down the left flank before attempting another reverse strike from a tight angle and forcing the goalkeeper into a save at his near post. However, with very few chances at either end, the sides remained level at half-time.

Like the second quarter, the third saw both teams cancel each other out and defences coming out on top with no chances for either side before Scotland came out of the blocks quickest in Q4.

First flashing a ball across the face of the Ulster goal, but a diving forward was unable to get a decisive touch. Meanwhile, in the closing stages, Zak Larmour was forced into two good saves to keep his side level at 1-1 as it would eventually finish.
