Hockey Olympic medalists, Jimmy Kirkwood, Stephen Martin and Billy McConnell were amongst those at the Mary Peters Trust annual Golf Finals Day which took place at Dunmurry Golf Club on Thursday 4th September.
Set up in 1975, the Mary Peters Trust this year celebrates its 50th anniversary of helping talented young sports people, both disabled and able-bodied to achieve their sporting dreams. Special guests playing in the competition were past Mary Peters Trust supported hockey players Jimmy Kirkwood, Stephen Martin and Billy McConnell who won gold and bronze medals at the Seoul (1988) and Los Angeles (1984) Olympics Games. The three hockey stars were joined by England and Team GB player Rob Clift who also secured Olympic gold at Seoul.
Congratulating the winners and runners-up, Lady Mary Peters said, “The Trust’s Finals Day event has been a wonderful part of our events calendar for many years and always proves to be a great day, no matter what the weather. Well done to this year’s winners.
“The Mary Peters Trust is proud to support so many up-and-coming young golfers who are developing their game both at home and in America. We can also boast a stellar set of Trust ‘alumni’ golfers, including Stephanie Meadows, Leona Maguire, Olivia Mehaffey, Graeme McDowell and Tom McKibbin. We look forward to helping many more young players in the future.”
Amongst other sports, the Mary Peters Trust is also a proud supporter of hockey, providing guidance to a number of players who have gone on to achieve great things in the sport.
In recent years, there are a number of young Ulster players who have all received support from the trust, including Erin Pimm, Isla Allen, Scarlett Taylor and Rebekah Lennon who have all represented Ireland at underage level.
