MPL: Students strike 10 against North Down

Queen’s University continued their unbeaten start to the season as they thrashed bottom of the league North Down 10-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Two penalty corners saw Ben Law bring his tally to 11 goals this season, whilst JJ Holley and Jack Mulholland both also managed to find the net twice in the win.

Further goals from Philip Campbell, Scott McCabe, Matthew Spence and Sam McMillan sealed the victory and sees the side move to 13 games without defeat in the league.

The win sees Queen’s extend their lead at the top of the division to five points whilst North Down remain at the foot of the table, five points adrift from automatic safety.

Heading into the weekend, Portadown were the students’ nearest title challengers, but they lost ground in the race as they were beaten 5-0 by Mossley.

The side were unable to build on Thursday’s impressive 4-1 win over Instonians and were instead convincingly beaten by their hosts.

Neal Glassey continued his form in front of goal, netting two to bring his total to 11 this season, the joint most of anyone in the division.

Meanwhile, further goals from Rhys Wilson, Cody Walker and Aaron Boyd sealed their biggest win of the season to end a run of consecutive defeats.

Following Portadown’s defeat, South Antrim climbed into second place as they won 4-2 away to Kilkeel.

The hosts came into the game off the back of their first win of the season, having beaten Belfast Harlequins last week but were unable to make it back-to-back wins.

Two goals from Jonathan Aiken and Jordan McCartan proved to only be consolation strikes as Ben Clarke and David Arneil both got on the scoresheet for their visitors alongside a debut goal for Jacob Hermon.

A fourth goal for the Lisburn side came from top scorer Max Taylor, who continued his impressive run of scoring in each of his sides last five games, bringing his tally for the season to six.

The final game of the weekend saw Belfast Harlequins end their run of three straight losses as they beat Bangor 4-2.

Dave McClune netted twice for the hosts, but goals from Matthew Gray, Cameron Ruttle, Connor Trimble and a first Harlequins strike from Ewan Hutchinson sealed the points for the visitors.

The win saw the Belfast side overtake Bangor in the table with the sides ending the weekend in seventh and eighth place.
