MPL: Portadown climb to third

Portadown climbed into the EYHL2 places as they beat Kilkeel 5-4 in a thrilling game on Saturday afternoon.

The Edenvilla side trailed three times before eventually taking all three points, with Ryan Bennett firing his side to the win, netting four goals.

David Rae, Mark Henning, Taylor McConnell and Neil Stevenson all got on the scoresheet for the hosts, but they were cancelled out as both Ryan Bennett and Mackenzie Bennett completed the comeback victory for their side.

Following his four-goal display, Ryan Bennett brought his tally to 17 strikes for the season, a tally only bettered by Neal Glassey of Mossley (21).

Meanwhile, their win puts the side third in the division, leading a host of clubs chasing EYHL2 qualification as just four points separate third to seventh in the table.

At The Glade, Mossley continued their league form as they beat Belfast Harlequins 3-1.

The hosts took the lead with just 90 seconds played when an aerial into the circle was missed by a Harlequins defender before Simon Todd was left with a tap-in.

It remained 1-0 until late in the third quarter when Jordan Taggart converted from a penalty corner to draw his side level, scoring his first goal for the Belfast club.

However, Mossley quickly struck back from a corner of their own, when a melee in the penalty area saw a loose ball fall for Matt Anderson before he restored their lead.

The win was sealed in the fourth period when the hosts won a high turnover before Rhys Wilson added a third goal for his side and cemented a third league win in a row.

The final game of Saturday’s action saw North Down pick up a second point of the season as they drew 3-3 away to Bangor.

Goals from Josh Gilmore, Andrew Welsh and David Morris helped the division’s bottom side earn the hard-fought draw as they move to within two points of 9th place Kilkeel who they meet this weekend.
