Ballymoney Hockey Club won the Veterans Cup after beating Lisnagarvey 5-1 at the Antrim Forum last night.
Goals from Olivia Linton, Ruth Sutherland, Catherine Boyd, Nikki Parke, and Susie Sneddon sealed the victory against the side that won the Vet Blitz just three weeks ago.
In a quick start to the game, Ballymoney thought they had the lead with nine minutes played when they had the ball in the net. Unfortunately for them, the whistle had already gone and they were instead given a long corner.
They did have their goal five minutes later when a driven cross was missed by several players in the circle before finding Olivia Linton at the back post. Her first-time finish came off the post before finding the back of the net.
Midway through the second quarter, they doubled their lead from a short corner as a Ruth Sutherland straight strike from the top of the penalty area was too much for the goalkeeper as it flew into the bottom corner.
However, just before the halftime break, Lisnagarvey were given a route back into the game when Lo Alcorn grabbed a goal back and reduced the deficit to one.
Eight minutes into the third quarter a free-flowing move ended with a deflection at the back post from Catherine Boyd for Ballymoney to regain their two-goal deficit and seemingly take the game out of sight.
Moments later it was 4-1. A quick Ballymoney counterattack saw an initial save from the goalkeeper before a reversed rebound from Nikki Parke extended their lead to three.
In the latter stages of the game, they added a fifth and a second from a penalty corner. This time a slipped ball to the left changed the angle of the strike for Susie Sneddon as her effort went in at the near post.
In the closing stages the eventual champions had a handful of chances, but the Lisnagarvey defence kept them at bay as the game finished 5-1.
