Hockey fell victim to the cold weather overnight with matches across the country being cancelled on Saturday.

Just two games in the Legacy Ulster Women’s Premier League went ahead as scheduled with league leaders Queen’s University thrashing Portadown 7-1.

The students got off to a flying start when Jenna McCarlie gave her side the lead with just eight seconds on the clock.

With no more goals in the first quarter, Alyssa Jebb doubled the lead in the second from a penalty corner to make it 2-0 at half-time.

Two more short corner goals from Jebb made it 4-0 before Jodie Simmons also struck from a corner to make it five.

Queen’s rounded off their scoring with a strike from Zoe Wilson and a second of the day for McCarlie, whilst their opponents grabbed a late consolation goal in the final quarter.

The other game in the division saw title rivals Ards beat bottom-of-the-table Armagh 3-0.

Two goals in succession gave Ards a quickfire lead as Rachel Houston scored from close range before Emma Reid teed up Susie Cotter for a second.

The Oranges extended their lead to three when Houston saw her shot saved before Cotter reacted quickest for her second of the game to seal the victory.

The win keeps Ards three points behind Queen’s at the top of the table, but with a game in hand against Portadown.

In the Men’s Premier League Cookstown continued their winning run as they beat North Down 6-0.

Jack Haycock made it six goals in his last three games as he scored two drag flicks to put his side 2-0 up.

Meanwhile, Michael Kerr added another goal from a short corner to put his side 3-0 ahead before the ten-minute mark.

As the game continued Cookstown maintained their attacking threat before Ryan Millar added his seventh and eighth strikes of the season to make it 5-0 to the league leaders.

Cookstown completed the rout as Callum Anderson made it 6-0 to the hosts when he was left unmarked at the back post to tap in.

The final game of the day saw Belfast Harlequins concede five goals for a second week running when they lost 5-1 to South Antrim.

Ryan West gave his side an early lead at Friends’ School Lisburn before top scorer Jordan Robinson made it 2-0 before the end of the first quarter.

Quins were given a route back into the game as Cameron Ruttle netted his fifth goal of the season before half-time.

However, after the restart it went from bad to worse for the visitors as Robinson got his second of the game before Peter Miligan and Ben Clarke brought it to 5-1.
