Belfast Telegraph Girls Senior Cup Final Preview

Royal School Armagh and Portadown College go head-to-head in the Belfast Telegraph Girls Senior Cup Final this evening at Playball, Stormont.

The game marks the third year in a row that the sides meet in the final, with the schools tied at one win each from the previous meetings.

In 2024, it was Royal School Armagh who lifted the trophy, becoming the first team to retain the title since Lurgan College in 2014, as they beat Portadown College 1-0.

That evening, a penalty stroke from Scarlett Taylor proved to be the difference between the two sides as Greg Thompson’s side retained their title.

A year later, the sides met once more, and it was Portadown College who ended their 29-year wait to lift the Girls Senior Cup with a shootout victory.

Joni Cunningham’s penalty corner was ruled out by an Evie Thompson strike to see the sides draw 1-1 at the end of normal time before an inspired substitution won Portadown the trophy.

Goalkeeper Jessica Finch found herself between the sticks, replacing Makayla Stevenson, with the substitute having not played a minute of normal time.

However, her coach’s faith was soon rewarded as she proved to be the hero of the shootout, saving two run-ins to see her side win 3-1 and lift the trophy.

Now Royal School Armagh and Portadown College prepare to go head-to-head for the third time, with what looks to be the ultimate decider between the two.

Both sides qualified for the final with Semi-Final victories at Havelock Park as RSA sealed a convincing 4-1 win over Strathearn School before Portadown College edged past Rainey Endowed, winning 2-0 with goals from Maisy Hannath and Evie Thompson.
