U18 Boys suffer defeat to Scotland

The Ulster U18 Boy’s suffered defeat in the first of three matches against Scotland this weekend.

Friday evening’s match saw the visitors run out 4-0 winners with the sides set to meet once more on Saturday before rounding off the series on Sunday.

With seven minutes on the clock it was Scotland who had the first chance of the game when a turnover in midfield saw the visitors break down the left before a weak effort on goal was cleared by defender Josh McMillan.

As the quarter approached its closing stages, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock as goalkeeper Rory Cunningham made a good initial save before a forward was on hand to convert the rebound from close range.

As the second quarter got underway the visitors had a chance to double their advantage with two shots in quick succession, but after a change in goal, Guy Campbell came out on top to keep it 1-0.

Midway through the quarter Ulster had their best chance of the game so far as Josh Williams skilfully beat the Scottish defence before his strike from the top of the circle took a deflection before the Scotland goalkeeper made the save.

With the half nearing an end, Ulster won their first penalty corner of the game, but Callum Hewitt saw his drag flick charged down by the first runner.

As Ulster failed to find an equalising goal, they went into the half-time break a goal behind.

In the 40th minute of the action, the visitors had another chance to extend the lead following a turnover in midfield.

Having broken quickly a forward found himself on his reverse side, squaring across the face of the Ulster goal where his teammate was unable to deflect goalward.

Then, just three minutes later they did double their advantage as goalkeeper Rory Cunningham denied a forward from a tight angle, before the Scotsman smartly converted the rebound on his reverse.

On the umpire’s whistle, Scotland were awarded a penalty corner with the ball eventually being worked to the back post where an unmarked forward converted a third goal for Scotland.

As the final quarter got underway Scotland added a fourth when a loose ball fell perfectly for a forward at the penalty spot before his slapped effort found the top corner.

The goal proved to be the final strike of the game with the visitors running out comfortable winners in the first meeting between the sides.
